Hugh Jackman's latest film requires a leap of imagination into the world of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Signourney Weaver's company manufactures efficient ruthless robot policemen in Joburgh South Africa gradually wiping out the local criminal scumbags with machine like efficiency. The game changes when one of her employees takes one of the robots to a new level of artificial intelligence, creating a human like personality. Blackmailed into assisting 3 bad guys (one a female punk who becomes chappie's mommy) chappie joins the heist and starts arsekicking some serious bad guys and fellow 'Robocops'. That's probably enough plot outline before moving on to spoilers. Let's just say though that the plot becomes trite and predictable. This is no Space odyssey or even Bladerunner. The actors provide walk through performances and the poor dialogue and lack of humour make chappue's journey something of a bore. Jackman starts out sleepwalking but gradually fashions his character into someone with more flesh on his bones than chappie But not by much. Having said that the action does provide something of a counterpoint. 2 and a half out of five stars (max). Hire the dvd and skip the popcorn fix.
